Encyclopædia Britannica (1988–1998)
International publisher of print, CD-ROM, and online reference products.

I served in a number of roles over nine-and-a-half years with Britannica.

Director of Product Development (1995–1998)

  • Served as liaison between the company's Advanced Technology Group and all marketing, editorial, and production work on Britannica Online, Britannica CD, and single-subject CD-ROMs.
  • Managed all scheduling of Britannica Online and Britannica CD.
  • Spearheaded partnership strategies for Internet publishing, including bundling deals with hardware manufacturers and Internet service providers, and co-publishing deals with other content providers.
  • Created initial marketing plans for the Britannica Internet Guide, an authoritative directory of Web sites compiled by Britannica's editors—a project that later evolved into Britannica.com.
  • Negotiated contracts with numerous software companies, including Microsoft, Netscape, Apple, and Earthlink Network for Britannica CD, and AltaVista for the Britannica Internet Guide.
  • Established specifications for CD-ROM-to-online connections for registration and product updates.
  • Managed a joint venture with VTech Inc. on a series of children's CD-ROMs.

Project Manager (1993–1995)

  • Directed much of the initial development of Britannica Online, including design, functionality, data preparation, quality assurance, and the writing of help and demos.
  • Designed initial subscription systems for consumer access to Britannica Online.
  • Organized production efforts to spin off the Britannica Online database into Britannica CD.
  • Assisted marketing department in promotions at Internet and educational trade shows.

Associate Editor, Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia (1990–1993)

  • Directed the transition of all textual and graphical content from print to CD-ROM on electronic versions of Compton's Encyclopedia.
  • Defined technical and staff requirements for a unified publishing system for simultaneous print and electronic editing (later used in electronic versions of Encyclopædia Britannica).
  • Managed editorial and design work on extensive historical timelines, an electronic atlas, and other encyclopedia features.
  • Worked with outside developers on the creation of Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia for the Philips CD-I player and Compton's Concise Encyclopedia for the Sony Data Discman.
  • Edited all documentation accompanying Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia and its spin-offs.
  • Provided competitive analysis to executive management on the CD-ROM encyclopedia business.

Assistant Editor, Great Books of the Western World (1988–1990)

  • Wrote, edited, and compiled quotations for writer/philosopher Mortimer J. Adler on the revision of 102 Great Idea essays for preliminary volumes of a multi-volume set of classic world literature, philosophy, science, and social science.
  • Worked with project director in all phases of editorial production.
  • Worked with Sales Promotion staff to position product to existing and prospective Britannica customers.
